When There's a Will There's a Way

Until There Are None In Need, We Will Be Their Voice

Meet Some of OUR resuces!

We would like to take this time to introduce you to some of the special rescues that have touched our hearts and enriched our lives. We will tell you a short story of their lives and why they are so special. Some had a rough start to life, others just shared a special connection with their people.

Emily's Rescues

Abby

Abby had a rough start in life. At four months old, she was abandoned at a local gas station on a very busy highway. If she had not been picked up by animal control, she could have easily been killed by a car. Animal control brought her to the shelter where the staff cleaned her up, treated her for fleas, and placed her avaliable for adoption. Abby was in a lanky puppy stage where she was not the most attractive puppy in the kennel, but she was one of the sweetest. Not long after she was brought in, I was hired. At first, I didn't really notice her, afterall, she wasn't very attractive. Then for some reason, something drew me to her. I began getting her out and carrying her around on a regular basis. She was almost adopted, but the couple changed their minds and adopted a younger, cuter puppy instead. Abby had been at the shelter for nearly a month and her time was drawing to a close. There were others that needed a chance to come to the front and hopefully be adopted. I decided on her last day there that she was too sweet to be put to sleep. I brought her home with the intentions of finding her another home, but it didn't work that way, I was smitten. Abby couldn't be happier anywhere else!

Brutus is my heart dog. Ever since I first saw a Great Dane, I knew I would have one one day. I never knew, though it would be so soon. Brutus was turned into the shelter when he was nine months old. He lived with a family with a young daughter. Brutus, being a puppy, accidently knocked her over. The family decided because of that, they didn't want him any longer. They brought him to the shelter, and I immediately fell in love. I took him home the next weekend. Being a Great Dane, it didn't take long for Brutus to attach himself to me. Three years later, we still have an incredible bond.

Choo-Choo

Choo-Choo is my first shelter rescue. While I was volunteering at the shelter, Choo-Choo's owners dropped her off because they just didn't want her anymore. Choo-Choo was very scared at the shelter because she wasn't used to the environment. I spent time with Choo-Choo, and ended up falling for the little Chihuahua mix. I convinced my parents to let me adopt her. At first they said no, but as soon as my mom met her, the rest is history.

This is Molly, a beautiful English Setter. Today, she is happy and healthy. She has a wonderful life where she is spoiled rotten and very much loved. That was not always the case, however.

Molly was turned into a local shelter by a good samaritan that found a very thin, very scared English Setter in her yard. Molly could hardly walk when she was brought to the shelter, and I had to carry her into the building. As I carried her bony body, her tail continued to wag. Something clicked right then between us. I knew I would bring her home. The only thing, though, is she was supposed to be a foster. That didn't happen. A year and a half later, she is still with me and will remain.

Waylon

Waylon was brought to the shelter by Millbrook animal control. He was obviously neglected and abandoned. He was covered in demodectic mange and was underweight. Despite all this, he was super sweet. We had to hold him as a stray just in case some slime bag decided to try to claim him. While he was at the shelter I kept a shirt on him to keep him warm because he had very little hair to keep him warm. When his stray holding time was up, I was planning on bringing him home and fostering him until he was well and then putting him up for adoption. I planned on bringing him home over a weekend, but somthing came up, and I wasn't able to. The then director of the shelter told me he was going to be put to sleep because "someone was supposed to take him home and they didn't" after that, I went straight to the back building and snatched him up and kept him safe the rest of the day. He along with Willy went to Shelia's house for a few days until I got somethings straight and I brought them both home. Given his breed and background, Waylon showed very little aggression he did have a bit of food aggression towards other animals when he first came to me, but that has since been resolved. Waylon is a true ambassador of the pitbull image.

Ariel

Meet Ariel! Ariel is a Harlequin Great Dane. She was abandoned at a shelter where she was scared and lonely. This is Ariel the day we went to visit her. Since she was still a stray, we were not able to take her, but later that day that would prove to be untrue...

As it turned out, Ariel was in heat. The shelter was packed that day, and the kennels were very small. The shelter staff put Ariel in a fenced area of the yard. The fencing seemed very secure. We were on our way back from our destination and stopped to visit her once again. We knew the shelter would be closed, but we were going to talk to her through the fence. When we pulled up into the parking lot, however, we saw Ariel and a Beagle mix running free! We didn't know what to do. Poor Ariel was afraid and wouldn't come to us. The Beagle (a male) followed her since she was in heat. I followed them into some nearby woods and the Beagle got brave enough to finally come to me. When he did, I was able to pick him up. When Ariel saw I was not a threat, she came to me. We put a make shift leash on Ariel while we tried to decide what to do. We called the sheriff's office who got us in touch with the shelter director. She explained to us the overcrowding situation and asked if one of us could foster her until her holding time was up. Shelia took her home no one ever claimed her and now she is a member of the family.

Ariel enjoys family outings. You can see how much happier she is with a loving family to call her own.

Aubie

Picture coming soon!

Aubie and my story is a lot like Emily and Brutus. I knew for a long time that I would one day have a Greyhound. But did not expect it so soon. Aubie came into the Shelter where we both worked. He had showed up in someone's yard with a collar and no tags on. He was 5-6 months old infested with fleas very dirty, he had small cuts on him and an injured back foot. By law, we had to hold him as a stray for seven days to give an owner a chance to claim him. But in that time, I knew he was the one for me. So the day the holding period was up I sent him to the vet to neutered, and have his foot taken care of. That was a lttle over three years ago and I have to admit he has been a learning experience. And, we love him dearly and here he will remain as a member of our family.

Ashley's Rescues

Cadbury

Cadbury was abandoned at the Animal Clinic with the rest of his litter. Needing an indoor/outdoor cat for a mouser, I brougt him home. Cadbury is about 8 months now and wanders between my house, Rita's house and the barn. He is becoming a wonderful mouser, but he still loves to cuddle.

Crathes

I adopted Crathes from a scrapbook store-we got $40 worth of stuff free to take him. He was a feral kitten. Someone found him when he was about 2 weeks and he had URI. He was raised with a fox kit and was a hellion when I got him at about 6 weeks. He's 4 now and fairly laid back although he can still raise cane when he wants to.

Payne

Payne not long after he was rescued. As you can see from this picture, he was so afraid, he hid behind his "daddy"

Payne showed up as a stray and never left after being fed once. He was very skittish and in pitiful condition. He had heartwroms. He has been abused, but is still very loving. He used to be scared of even the cats but loves to play with them now.

Unfortunately, Payne was euthanized 1/13/05 due to problems he could not overcome from his past. Payne will be missed by all that loved him.

Harley

Andy (Ashley's brother) got Harley from the clinic when she was about 2 months. At first just the sister was a give away but I really wanted her. When she became a giveaway I claimed her, but Andy feel in love with her. 2 years later she lives with me since Andy had to move. She's constantly getting into trouble but I love her anyways.
